Oh, Canada!

In an upset, Canadian freestyle skier Alexandre Bilodeau won the men's moguls last night to finally become the first Canadian to win an Olympic title inside his own country's borders.  The Beer Chicks were amazed and confused watching Bilodeau flying down a hill full of moguls, then launching himself high into the air doing scary spinning twisty things, and then landing on his feet, and continuing to do moguls at warp speed, finishing the race in less than 24 seconds!

Absolutely astounded, we thought that we would do what we do best and drink a toast to Alexandre.  But what beer would be apropos?  Well, mes amis, it turns out that Bilodeau is from Montreal, Quebec.

Perfect, because in the Beer Chicks’ cellar was a 750ml bottle of Unibroue’s Quelque Chose: a delicious cherry ale that is brewed specifically as a winter beer and is actually made for heating to 160ºF (in a hot water bath – don’t forget to remove the cork) and served as a hot drink.

Cherries are soaked in the beer as it ferments to produce a sweet and tart delicious complex beer.  What’s more, Quelque Chose (which is French for ‘That’s Something’) is made by Unibroue, an artisanal brewery from – you guessed it – the Montreal area that specializes in Belgian-style beers.

In fact, in our humble opinion, Unibroue makes some of the best Belgian-style beers in North America.  We are strong supporters of this awesome brewery as well as feats of Olympic radness.  So in honor of these two brilliant lights of Montreal, raise a glass of some of these Beer Chicks picks from Unibroue!

  • Trois Pistoles  – “Three Towers” in French, this Belgian-style Dubbel with dark raisin, spice and bread. The alcohol is well-hidden and the hops dry it out perfectly. 9% ABV.

  • Fin du Monde – “The End of the World” in French, this Belgian-style Tripel is excellently effervescent with estery pepper and fruit on the nose with a citrus and dry finish.  9% ABV.

  • Blanche de Chambly – Blanche stands for “White” in this very sessionable example of a Belgian-style White Ale.  Brewed with coriander and bitter orange peel, this beer has a hint of apricot in the finish.  5% ABV.
